Guidance: Inventions
Guidance for Danish-Swedish research collaborations
ReproUnion brings together universities, hospitals, and researchers across Denmark and Sweden to strengthen collaboration and accelerate innovation in reproductive health. As part of this mission, we are working to develop and identify better processes for managing intellectual property (IP), invention disclosure, and commercialization in cross-border research. On this page we share some experience along with information and guidance from partner universities and regions to help researchers, clinicians, and industry partners navigate the practical aspects of technology transfer and development.
Did you know? Universities and regional hospitals in Denmark and Sweden operate under different IP arrangements.

Denmark
Universities and regions own inventions (via their Technology
Transfer Offices).

Sweden
Researchers employed at universities personally own their inventions (teacher’s exemption or professor’s privilege). This does not apply to public sector employees.
Navigating the Cross-Border Landscape
Working across two legal and institutional systems brings unique opportunities, but there can also be practical hurdles, when Danish and Swedish partners collaborate on joint innovation projects. Differences in ownership rules, funding mechanisms, and commercialization practices mean that researchers and clinicians often face situations not fully covered by national guidelines. To overcome some of these challenges, please have a look at our advice for academic partners, as well as advice for industry partners.
